Applying for an Internship
What do I need to provide for my application?
If
you are arranging your internship placement through your university
they will provide all this information for you. If you are an
individual then you need to do the following;

- Submit written permission from their academic institution
- Submit an application and résumé
- Secure necessary work permit, if required
- Assume financial responsibility for accommodations, meals, local
transportation and personal expenses
- Pay an administrative
fee
How much does it cost?
The cost of
an internship placement varies depending on the length of internship.
Please email us for more details
How do I secure an internship placement?
You
do not need to secure your own placement; this is what Anglo American
is there to do. Once you have filled in your form and sent it
to Anglo American, or to your university you will hear from us directly
regarding your placement.
What do I need to include on my CV/Résumé?
In
the UK a résumé is called a CV. It is slightly
different to an American CV. You should include all of the following;
- Personal details
- Personal objective (a short 2-3 line statement)
- Educational background (basic)
- Work History
- Relevant experience
- Extra curricular activities
- Computer skills
- References
If you want to see a sample CV then please ask
us,
and we would be happy to send you one.
What should I include on my personal statement?
Your personal statement is very important, and you
should put a lot of though into it. You should include some of
the following points:
- What kind of placement you are looking for
- What you hope to achieve from your placement
- Why you want to do an internship placement in London
- How you feel any relevant experience you might have will assist
you in your placement
- Computer skills that you have
- How the experience will assist you in later life
- Anything else you feel is relevant to your placement
About the internship programme as a whole
What kind of placements can you arrange?
Anglo
American has a vast range of internship placements, covering all major
academic fields. Please see our main
internship page for more details of placement fields
Do I need to be placed in the field of my major?
Normally
yes. It is very difficult to find placements for students
who are looking for a placement outside of their field of study. Under
exceptional circumstances however, it may be possible, depending on
the experience and background you have.
Will I get academic credit for my internship?
Most
students are able to get academic credit for their internship. You
will need to speak to your university about this directly.
Do I have to be a US citizen to apply for the programme?
Not
necessarily. As long as you are able to meet the requirements
for the programme and have the relevant visas then you are welcome
to participate in the programme.
I am a grad student. Can I still come on
the programme?
Yes, we have had a number of grad students on
the programme who are not doing the internship for credit. Do I need a visa to come to the UK?
At
this point in time visa rules are changing. Currently, we
recommend that all our students purchase a BUNAC permit. For
more information on this please see www.bunac.org or
speak to your study abroad office.
Can I do an internship if I am an individual and not coming
through my university?
Yes, we accept individual students onto
our programmes as long as you meet certain requirements. If you
are unsure then please contact
us.
Will I get paid for my internship?
No, all of our placements are unpaid.
Is my travel covered to and from my internship
placement?
Travel costs to and from your placement are your own responsibility.
Do I need to go through any security checks?
You
may need to provide a police check for certain placements, or fill
in clearance forms. If you need to do this we will advise
you well in advance of your arrival date
Do I need any kind of insurance?
Anglo
American does not provide insurance for interns, so you should take
out your own insurance. Many students have this anyway,
through the university but please check with your Study Abroad Office.
They will be able to advise you. A lot of universities recommend
purchasing an ISIC (International Student ID) card purely because of
the insurance that it offers to its holders. This should not
be used as an alternative to insurance though.
When you have been accepted onto the Programme
What happens once I have been accepted on the internship programme?
First
of all you need to fill in an Anglo American
Application form. This
will be provided to you once you have made an enquiry, or via your
university if you have arranged your placement through them. Once we
have received your application form we will contact you, and discuss
possible internship options. When your internship
is confirmed we will send you all the details of your placement, including
contact details, information about the company, working hours and anything
else that you might need before you arrive in the UK. We will
be in regular communication with you from the moment you send in your
application, until you arrive in the UK
When will I find out about my placement?
We
will email you once we have found you a placement. Full
details will be provided once you and/or your home campus has confirmed
that the internship placement is satisfactory.
Where will I be housed during my placement?
During
your placement you will be housed in the Anglo American housing, unless
otherwise agreed. More information about Anglo American
accommodation can be found in the housing section.
Will I be living with other interns?
Yes,
most of our interns live together in our housing. Sometimes
however, individual students are placed in other apartments with American
students on different academic programmes
How long does my internship last?
Our
internships can last for a variety of durations, ranging between 8
and 12 weeks. If you want to arrange for your placement to
last longer that is sometimes possible What will my working hours be?
This
depends on your placement. Most placements are Monday-Thursday,
although we also arrange placements for 2 days per week only. Normally
you will work from approximately 9.00am-5.30pm, but you will be advised
of this before you arrive in the UK
How do I know what to bring with me?
Normally
you would not be expected to bring anything out of the ordinary with
you. We will advise you of the dress code in advance of
your arrival so you know what kind of clothes you should bring. For
more general information please see our pre-departure
section.
What am I expected to wear at my internship site?
This
varies depending on where you are placed. Some internship
sites require smart attire, whereas others are very casual. Just
as a guideline smart means suit and tie, smart/casual means shirt,
but not necessarily a jacket and tie, and casual would mean pretty
much everything other than jeans. If you are unsure just ask.
What kind of tasks will I be expected to undertake?
The
tasks you will be required to undertake are very varied. Initially
you should expect to work on basic administrative tasks, but don't
worry, you will progress from this. Many students have contact
with their on-site internship supervisor before arriving in the UK.
If this is the case then you can always ask them for some information.
They will be happy to help.
Do I need to have an interview before my placement begins?
Nearly
all of our placements do not require an interview. In a few cases you
may have to undertake a short interview on your first day, but in the
majority of cases this is merely a formality.
Once you arrive in London
What happens when I arrive in London?
When
you arrive in London you will normally make your way to a pre-arranged
meeting point. During working hours we will then transport you
to your housing. Outside of working hours you are expected to
make your own way there. Full details on this will be provided
to you a few weeks before arrival.
What kind of orientation do I get when I arrive in London?
If
you are part of a group you will have an orientation
session to London.
At your orientation session a number of different subjects will be covered.
Normally we would have a Police Officer come and talk to you to advise
you about safety in London, a representative from our Operations team
will speak to you about housing, and living in London will also be covered.
Our Internship Supervisor will also come along, and provide you with
all the documentation required for your placement.
What do I do on my first day?
Normally
on your first day you will meet with your on-site supervisor, and have
a general chat with him/her. In some cases you may
be required to undertake training. Every organisation is different.
What do I do if I have a problem at my internship site?
First
of all don't panic! We realise that these things happen
and we do have measures in place if this does occur. First and
foremost you need to contact Anglo American. We will then call
you back at a time that is convenient to you to discuss the problem.
If necessary you can come into the office, and we will assist you.
We will then decide on the appropriate course of action and advise
you of what will be done. If necessary we will find you an alternative
placement
What happens if I need to take a day off sick?
It
is essential that you let your internship site know as soon as possible.
If you can, try not to leave a message on a machine. In
the past we have had instances where people have not checked their
answering machine and have called us because their intern has not arrived.
Please also let Anglo American know. Then, if your internship site
calls we know the situation.
Am I expected to keep a journal of my experiences?
Some
universities require you to keep a journal of your experiences. Others
do not. We recommend that you do this for your own reference
How do I get to my internship placement?
London
has an excellent public transport system. You will
be provided with full directions on how to get to your placement.
Will someone come and visit me during my placement?
Yes. Our internship co-ordinator will call you during the first
week of your placement to find out how things are going. We
will then arrange for someone to visit you mid way through your placement.
On some occasions we may come and visit you twice, depending on where
you are located/if this is necessary.
Do my Supervisors fill in any kind of forms for me?
We
will communicate on a regular basis with your supervisor. Half
way though the placement we will ask them to fill in a short tick box
form and then at the end of the placement they will complete an evaluation
form.
What happens after my placement?
After
your placement we will provide you with a written summary of your
internship placement, and the evaluation forms that your supervisor
has completed. If you need anything else
filled in then we are happy to do this.
